I think it is time for another discussion of 3.3L gas mileage.
Several road trips later, this is what I have seen. Best average on a single tank of gas, going down to LA from SLC, UT, was 27.1. Highest showing average (leaving the LA area, as far as starting up into the San Bernardino Nat'l Forest on I-15, was 29.8 (which surprised me, since I had got stuck in rush hour traffic for a little while). Average mileage from SLC to LA (total trip to the motel in Redondo Beach) was 26 point something (sorry, lost the actual fraction, but I do remember it being in the upper end). And average trip mileage from LA back to West Jordan (SLC) was 23.3: so uphill from the coast seems to make a c. 3 MPG difference, compared to going down from here to the coast.
Compared to my road trips to TX, OR and WA, this road trip produced the single highest result (29.8) and the largest difference in over all average, c. 3 MPG difference going and returning.
