Hello Stingerforum,

I finally got myself a Stinger earlier this year and needless to say I absolutely love it! However, while stock sounds decent, I keep feeling like the Stinger deserves to sound a bit less…tamed?

After some research and reading numerous threads on here, I figured the best option for me would be a cat-back system as it’s a simple installation, doesn’t void factory warranty, increases some power, adds always-welcome fuel efficiency (this is also my daily), and most importantly - lets the stinger growl the way it was meant to!

Given I have a 2023 GT2 and want to keep the active valve, it boils down to either the 2022+ MBRP Pro Series or the new Borla S-Type system. And therein lies my question: which one to get.

Looking at other posts, people seem pretty happy with both, but there doesn’t seem to be a lot of comparison out there. MBRP is rated to add an additional 7 ponies while Borla advertises generic “dyno proven performance results”…if anyone has more specific data to compare would be greatly appreciated!

Also, this being a daily I’m looking for the least amount of drone possible. Part of why I want to keep the valve is so I can keep the Stinger close to stock noise levels for commute/cruise, but less tamed for the fun rides.

TL:DR Between the two active valve systems - MBRP and Borla - which has less drone, better sound, and how do they compare in performance?

I haven’t decided yet either for this reason. For both what I’ve seen is comfort/cruise is still going to be louder than the stock sport setting.
Drone can be managed by the mbrp resonators and tips.

@Scorpion24 said this well,

@SnoopyTheFlyBoy your best bet is going to be the MBRP Catback paired with the optional resonators and the tips. A catback without these resonators is going to be a little raspy, and because this is a 6cyl, the rasp is inevitable. Now the Stinger's actual stock tips let out underneath the car before the rear bumper, and the hatchback helps amplify this noise right back into the cabin.

MBRP recently released replacement tips that fit directly with their exhaust, bringing the outlet to behind the rear bumper so that the noise doesn't circulate back into the cabin.

Let me know if you are interested and I can get you a discount on these items. The tips are not currently listed on our website, so you will have to order via email at:

Thank you for the input! The general consensus I’ve seen appears to be in favor of the MBRP. Plus the recent sales helped me decide as well, went ahead and snagged myself the MBRP…now to wait for the back-ordered cat back to ship haha

I didn’t even know the tips existed so I’m most certainly interested. Would love to know more about them as I can’t seem to find them elsewhere either, expect an email shortly ;)

For anyone else in the same boat I was:

After an extended production time and finally getting it installed, I’m glad I didn’t go with another system as the MBRP makes plenty sound. The smooth hint of gurgles when coming off the throttle is satisfying and the high RPMs are simply beautiful, however the drone that kicks in at the low end of turbos (right around 2k-3.5k RPM) is unreal and not in a good way.

Given the price of these catback systems I’d have expected more regarding the drone issue. I don’t really feel like cutting the pretty new pipes and spend more $$$ for adding resonators that shouldn’t have to be an additional purchase given the original price point. There are no real tips either (simple rough saw cut ends)… that being said, I’ve heard getting actual tips might help with drone as it extends the outlet beyond the trunk and eliminates the trunk resonating the sound back into the cabin.

Any suggestions regarding the droning?

When these say they use the factory EVC system, does that mean they actually plug into the ACTUAL factory plugs?
I had the JUN BL that needed a whole standalone controller, so wiring that up, getting it AC power and getting the wires from the trunk under the car was a pain and the valve controller stopped working after 2 years on top of that. Plus the sound wasn't very cool anyway. Moderately better than stock.
The only thing I liked was that in quiet mode it was very quiet, which was my goal so when I leave my neighborhood at 6am I don't annoy the hell out of people.
Would you say the MBRP system is pretty quiet too on the quiet setting?
I'm considering getting another exhaust because I wrecked my first stinger with the JUN BL and didn't bother taking the time to swap it with my new stinger because I was never very happy with it anyway plug the damn controller got glitchy and they want over $400 for it.

Yes, the whole motor module and stock wires get plugged into the MBRP system - no additional wiring or tinkering needed.

There definitely is a difference between open/closed valve, however personally I wish there was a bit more of a difference.

Any upgraded exhaust will be more noticeable but overall I think this system fits my personal idea of “quiet enough”. The only exception is my previously described drone issue however can be avoided by staying off the turbos when leaving your neighborhood early morning.

when you say the whole motor module, do you mean you have to remove that part from the stock pipes and install it on the aftermarket one?
or they come with their own motors and valves and simply accept the factory plug?

The actual valve is inside and part of the exhaust pipe itself, which is why the system has to come specifically built for the 2022+ models. However, the motor module that moves the valve inside the pipe is the small black box you can see in the picture I included and simply gets transferred. There’s a cable attached to the inside of the rear bumper and simply plugs back into the motor that was transferred onto the new system. Hope that makes sense.
