2020 Stinger GT w/AS tires gets GT based tires

Went to do a drive around the dealer circle in my area, popped into KIA and noticed a Stinger with the Stinger script in the center of the hatch, 2020, yup! Checked it out and noticed that it was a GT1 with 19" AS tires. The installed tires were the Michelin Primacy Tour, right away I thought, isn't the Primacy line a GT tire? It is, in fact a GT AS tire, I wondered why they didn't use a High Performance version, then I remembered that there weren't any direct match for the OEM staggered setup. Now, I thought they could have used the Pilot Sport AS 3+, which in my opinion, would be the better choice for the Stinger as an AS tire. However, I don't know if its snow performance is better than the GT tire and most people looking for an AS setup want to be able to use the tire in the snow as well. Typically GT tires tend to perform better there than performance based AS tires.

Maybe for the 2021 facelift they will have a new wheel design for a squared AS setup, that would satisfy some folks as well.
 
I hope you can still get the summer high performance tire as a option on the AWD GT2. I would hate to spend $1000+ on new pilot sport 4S tires when I get the car.
 
Looks like you will have to get new tires:

Stinger GT/GT1/GT2 (AWD):

  • 19-inch Michelin all-season tires will replace the standard 19-inch summer tire (18-inch all-season tire option no longer available)
Checked KIA's Media website and the information above is from the site. This might be to satisfy folks that want the 19" option with AS tires however, the Pilot Sport AS 3+ would have been the tire of choice for a lot of enthusiasts that want performance AS tires.

If you get the car now, you'll want the A/S for the rest of the winter anyway; and you can save up for summer tires. :P

When I bought my 2019 AWD GT last December, it came with the staggered 19" summer performance tires. I bought a set of 18" wheels mounted with snow and ice tires from tire rack that I use during the winter months. It works out very nice for driving here in Iowa.

That is what I plan to do. The thing is that now I have to buy both Summer tires and winter tires with wheels. Before I would have only needed to buy winter tires and wheels. I am hoping I can sell the factory all seasons and that will cover the cost of either the summer or winter tires. So in the end it will work out, just a little more complicated and a few more steps involved.
 
Just curious - do the A/S tires get more milage than the current tires? I love the performance, but would prefer to not have to buy new tires every 10-12k miles.

Yes they likely will. but I am not sure how much more.
The treadlife warranty difference is 30K for summer tires, and 45K for A/S. I got c. 18K out of my summer rears and c. 22K our of my front summers.

Keep in mind that staggered setups halve the treadlife warranty, so I exceeded that. But still, I don't like wearing tires out that fast.

Yeah, I'm a tightwad, but I view summer tires as just another 50 bucks a month on my lease payment. From what i read, people are getting about 18k miles (or less) out of their summer rubber, and at about $1,000 for a new set, that's $55/mo.

I get all the traction I need out of good A/S tires, and they have better wet and cold weather traction, so why would I want tires that erase themselves like an art gum eraser? o_O I can run the full length of my leases on the original rubber, so I haven't bought tires in a loooong time.
 
Some folks want to be able to take that 25mph on ramp at 60, without worrying about it sliding, so the stickier summer rubber is preferred.

because with A/S tires you won't stop, accelerate, or handle as well as the proper rubber. If you were worried about wear costs, you shouldn't buy a 365hp car. And contrary to popular belief, better performance tires usually work better in the wet too as long as you don't go to cup tires. It's just in the very cold they drop off.
