2020 Hyundai Grandeur

Hyundai introduced the 2020 Grandeur to the Korean press on Tuesday, the car has similar design cues to the recently released Sonata. Here are a couple of video of it:

This won't be a Sonata replacement. It already failed to move units when they sold it in the U.S. as the Azera a few years ago. It's also bigger and more expensive than the Sonata and it would undoubtedly eat into sales of the G80s it would be sold alongside.

The G80 is a Genesis product while the Grandeur will be Hyundai's Largest model. They are not going to price it similar to the Genesis. That new design is what is in these days and I don't see how it is a failure. The Sonata is, in my opinion, a very good looking vehicle and it has been designed to perform well against its competitors. I do believe this is a mid-cycle refresh, Hyundai seems to be giving their vehicles a make over for the 2020 model year and beyond. Their European designers and engineers are working hard to bring about the new look and engine upgrades/replacements. The rumor is that there are some issues still being worked out with the 2.5 engine which is why we haven't seen the G80 launch with its 2.5T version yet.

I suspect they are still working on tuning the new engines to get them just right before launching them. The G80 and GV80 debut has been pushed back a couple of times already. Who knows if they will be shown this year.

The failure in the U.S. of the 5th gen Azera is attributed to the release of the Genesis cannibalizing it's sales. If Hyundai made the mistake of bringing it back it would go right back to being in direct competition with the Genesis. They would sell it at dealerships were G80s are sold and at a price would undercut the G80 enough to take sales away from Genesis. It makes no sense for Hyundai to repeat history by bringing this car back to the U.S.

It's also a really ugly refresh. The looks of the original 6th gen were much better. But that's just my personal opinion.

I see where you're going there. Back then, the Azera was an ok car, the Hyundai Genesis sedan was a full on luxury car that felt like one and drove like one and had the build quality of one. The Azera while having similar space and decent looks, drove like a boat. It felt like it was designed for old people that wanted space, a V6 (because somehow that was a thing, even though it was a lackluster engine) engine and something somewhat luxurious. Today, Genesis is it's own brand and built to a higher level of quality and appeal to folks looking for something luxurious, that is also reliable. To my knowledge, Genesis isn't giving big discounts on their vehicles like Hyundai will. Genesis will have their own stores in the future and be separate from Hyundai. Remember, not everyone is a car person, some still don't know that this new Genesis brand is from Hyundai. Heck, there are folks today that don't know Toyota makes Lexus!

I think they feel with the design direction of their vehicles, this new Grandeur should do well here as well. They don't have to build a ton of them for us, as they make them in their home market and they sell a lot there. Much like KIA with the K900, it does well in their home market and others. If sales pickup they can send more over. They have to work on getting their products into more markets, the more sales the better. Comparing other full size, non-luxury cars to the Grandeur, in the US market currently, I think it is better looking vehicle.
