Junk In That Trunk

With the recently announced 2018 Buick Regal Sportback, and its respective specifications, I am starting to believe that the initial specs for the cargo capacity of the Stinger are "off". Its either the method used to "measure" varies wildly from manufacturer to manufacturer or the number was just plain incorrect.

Buick Regal Sportback
192.9″ L x 73.3″ W x 57.3″ H
WB: 111.4″
Cargo Capacity: 31.5 ft^3

Stinger GT
190″ L x 73.6″ W x 55.1″ H
WB: 114.4″
Cargo Capacity: 14.3 ft^3

So its 17.2 ft^3 larger? This has to be a measurement method issue.

So I went to a newly released Hyundai / Kia sedan to look at cargo capacity specs for a frame of reference (with the assumption that they would be measured in the same manner).

Stinger GT
190″ L x 73.6″ W x 55.1″ H
WB: 114.4″
Legroom: 42.6" / 36.4"
Cargo Capacity: 14.3 ft^3

Hyundai Elantra Sport
180″ L x 71″ W x 57″ H
WB: 106.3″
Legroom: 42.2" / 35.7"
Cargo Capacity:14.4 ft^3

So, uh, the Elantra Sport has 0.1 ft^3 MORE cargo capacity? o_O

I think it's likely in a few cases that the Stinger comes up short because it's being compared to cars that don't have spare tires, but in this case you seem to be right; They're just somehow measuring it differently. Maybe they're measuring the Stinger with seats up VS Elantra with them folded?

I thought I remember hearing someone say they saw it in person and thought the cargo area looked somewhat shallow in terms of height? If so, around 14 cubic feet sounds about right, my Mustang is kind of shallow but is fairly deep and is around 13 cubic feet.

The Buick, I don't know... maybe Kia is measuring the cargo capacity with the cover in place but Buick isn't? If the length/width is roughly the same as the Stinger that could account for the extra space, if they were measuring up to the ceiling.

I agree that the Kia is at disadvantage with its space saver spare vs. the competition with mobility kits or runflats (for cost savings, weight savings, increased space, whatever the reason).

I think Buick's number is measured using the entire hatch area (likely encroaching on rear viability). So not apples to apples.

The Elantra measurement is with the seats up, not folded. But it does not have a spare tire.

Here is every Kia 4-door "sedan" model:
  • Optima Hybrid: 13.4 ft^3 (mobility kit)
  • Rio: 13.7 ft^3 (mobility kit)
  • Stinger 14.3 ft^3 (space saver spare tire)
  • Forte: 14.9 ft^3 (mobility kit)
  • Optima: 15.9 ft^3 (mobility kit)
  • K900: 15.9 ft^3 (space saver spare tire)
  • Cadenza: 16 ft^3 (space saver spare tire)

I think that the Stinger it´s a good contender to the Audi S5 Sportback !!! In all aspects and this is a tuff league !!!

Hi All,

I'm keen to see the correct cargo specs as my partner and I are golfers and need to fit 2 x bag and buggy.

We own a previous model Opel Insignia sedan and barely fit atm.

Keen to see Stinger and new Insignia cargo otherwise - gulp - Mondeo for practicality.

Golf clubs are mentioned in press releases...

Someone should build a sliding mechanism for rear seats combined with an effective cover to hide GOLF CLUBS. Then older couples like us wouldn't need a Mondeo or Skoda.

Cheers PK

Wondering about this 14.3 cu ft Stinger cargo capacity reported in this thread. I know it's an old thread, but cargo reports I'm seeing are 23 cu ft with seats up and 41 with seats folded down. And surely this beats the competition badly (BMW at 17 cu ft). Am I missing something here?

Most folks believe that orginal 14.3 number was how much space was under the privacy cover. It is no surprise when stacked to the glass it beats the Audi Sportback, BMW GC, etc. The Stinger is bigger and heavier than all of those.

Ahh! that makes sense. Thanks for clarifying Bamm1

orginal 14.3 number

I like to add some real life numbers:

A long road trip in February/March with the fully loaded Stinger convinced us of the the necessity of what I would call a luggage restraint system. Think of a heavy duty bag made from truck tarp material custom fitted to the available space, with a fully zippered top and some cinch belts.

The measurements are essentially
67" long (bumper to top edge of turned down seat),
36" wide (between the wheel wells) and
17" high (to allow full view of and out of the rear window)

The system is actually sized to take advantage of the full width of the trunk behind the wheel wells, and up front of the width of the seats. What is being constructed has consequently more of an hour glass shape than a box with straight sides.

If one were to use just the measurements given above, the calculated volume would be appr. 23 3/4 cft,
by adding the extra volume at the top & bottom, total load capacity would likely exceed a 25 cft. and load height be
still under or at the height of the cargo cover.

Our load consisted of three roller cases, 28", 26" & carry-on, three back-packs, a 12 x 12 x 26" trunk organizer, a desk top computer, three cases of wine, three cases of beer, a mid-sized cooler, plus jackets, shoes, thermos bottles, 1 gal. of windshield washer fluid etc., and I had still a full rear view.

You can imagine nobody would like this much stuff flying around the cabin and in to your back in the case of an emergency. :)

Happy travels :)

3 CASES OF WINE AND 3 CASES OF BEER .......................I Like the way you roll !!

People have thrown two mountainbikes into it .. that's all I need to know :) Also, why not actually put an image of the trunk in this thread:

I've had an entire queen size mattress, metal bed frame, headboard, and footboard in my trunk at once. It's a huge space!

(the mattress was cut and rolled)

so you're converting your GT to a camper van ? Bawaaaa

My issue is that my golf bag does not fit laterally. Have to diagonal. Mostly because the frame is more narrow that lateral distance at trunk aft. Driver in bag won't clear frame.

I posted this before. 4 nightstands and a dresser from IKEA.

Oh that's it. Torch it!

Managed to stuff 2 large suitcase camera bags, light stands. 3 x studio strobes and a bunch of photography gear in the trunk!

Is there anyone that wouldn't mind actually measuring the trunk height? Im looking for the floor to the parcel tray and floor to hatch without the tray at the furthest part of the trunk. Im wondering if a stroller with large wheels will fit in this thing with the seats up
