Anyone thought about making hood ducts real?

Seems to me could make some nice ducts with drains that could let engine heat out

Funny you should say that, I though if you drilled out the holes and glued a piece of fine stainless mesh behind it it would look good and not let water in but air out. Who’s game?

Here is the only video i have found on Stinger hood vents.
Video is not about making the hoods functional, but replacing the factory hood vents with carbon fibre vents.
The interesting parts that there are screws underneath holding it in, also clips that can be lifted out using a plastic card, and most important, under the vents its all metal plating and the black cover above the engine bay, which may make it difficult or impossible to make the vents functional.

Thanks you that video, I wanted to replace my vents.

Yep, that's cutting and painting; Then create air plenum to drain rain yet allow airflow.

Maybe someone will make a kit, but you're still going to have to cut and then paint to prevent corrosion.

I'd leave well enough alone. Air flows through the engine bay by design. This is designed to effectively cool the engine and aid aerodynamics. Putting holes in your bonnet without proper engineering is only likely to inhibit performance.

Leave sleeping dogs alone .

I tend to agree with @Matt77 and @Eugene Onegin. These cars have been extensively tested in wind tunnels and part of the 167mph-plus speeds are because they have tweaked things to work right. The hood could act as a baffle, directing incoming air down over the turbos, transmission housing and exhaust system rather than allowing it to vent out the top, cooling little or nothing. No one really knows the airflow unless you have your own wind tunnel.

Doubtful that Kia did much testing over 124 mph in wind tunnel. I have seen posts and claims about extensive wind tunnel testing but haven’t seen anything that really confirms this. The car would unlikely be adversely effected by venting hood. Venting out top would lower pressure under the car hence reducing lift.

Also if one were to look at mustang vented hoods they are almost exactly same as ours just have small vent holes all the way through insulation. Just don’t see this as a huge issue. As long as it is done well no corrosion risk.

Would be interesting to see engine compartment temps vented verses unvented. I suspect aftermarket hoods will have vents soon.

weeeell, i just bought a hood from a junk yard just outside of chicago, they had a wrecked stinger. car has been stripped, but the hood is still okay-ish. paid $75 for it and it should be here in about a week. i am going to try and make a functional hood vent. will keep everyone posted with pics. hopefully it isn't that bad.

heck of a deal on the hood. Please report back, would very much like to do this if I am able to find a used one. Also do you have the infor of the junk yard that had the hood? Looking for an interior.

hey rob, interiors were gone, that was the main reason i called. that and the nose, but the car was stripped and it was sideswiped. lots of damage. hope this hood is in better condition than what was described

Okay, just paid 75 bucks for an optima hood:mad:. Called the guy and he apologized, said his crew didn't know what a stinger was. He refunded the money. Said the hood in question has since been sold. x 2!!!! Still on lookout to making them functional. Also, in answer to the question about wind tunnel testing. They probably did, and being the ducts aren't ruining the airflow, per see, I figure that there will be a duct in the near future. Looking at engine bay, it might not be a ram air setup, more like a way for under hood heat to escape.

You don’t think a major car brand did wind tunnel testing over 124 mph when the top speed is ECU governed at 167 and the car is sold in Germany where 127mph is a Sunday cruise?
Lol ....no as their wind tunnel can’t blow harder than 124 mph. I’m sure they computer modeled 167 and maybe did some drives near that speed. ....And having spent lots of time in Germany 127 isn’t often a speed hit by Sunday drivers. But again lowering pressure under hood is usually a good thing and I know temps under hood get pretty warm so for us who aren’t ripping out 167 mph pulls I see benefits!

FYi...we're making "functional" hood vents. It was a very popular product that we made for the Gen Coupe crowd. Something for the Stinger is in the works, but currently in R&D phase. These are a bit more difficult to do than the Gen version unfortunately.

When I got my car, the sales rep said that he knows of a Stinger with functional hood vents, a mod that was done as the car got chipped and obtained "425 HP". I've mentioned this before, and I am apologetic that I don't have any further information. I keep forgetting to ask when I visit the dealership. I will try to repent.

Tagged Import Shark so they might see this.

Would it be good...yes.
Would it work? Probably but I think it may affect the rate of pressure around the engine therefor the airflow aswell for cooling. Any mechanics want to make a point?
