Michelin’s cracking

Needed to change my oil today, and found this. Got under and noticed that both front tires are split/cracked on the inside. Michelin 255/35r20 Pilot Sport 4s w/ about 40k miles on them. Got new Continental DWS06’s going on tomorrow. Damn I feel lucky I didn’t have a blow out. No wonder my front tires have been going up in pressure so quick. Heating up fast.

That is odd for the fronts. My experience is outside wear first in front, especially LF. My rears wear on the inside though.

How in the world did you get 40K miles out of a set of 4S? They are warrantied to 20K miles and the rears are half that for being staggered.
 
I do a lot, I mean a lot of Highway driving. Ive had this car 2 yrs as of Oct 13th. Got it with 61k and she’s now at 132k. We’ll see what she gets outta these Conti’s on the front.

Those Contis are great if you need an all season tire. They are so many similar vehicles that

run these tires in the Pacific Northwest. The Pilots, in my experience, don't like the cooler temps up

here and seem to turn into bowling balls during the fall and winter. Hope you can find the right

tire for your experience and climate.

Common problem with Michelin Pilot Sport 4s that Michelin denies

My two front tyres I had on the car since buying the car brand new brand new both cracked at 20,000kms. At 10,000km they looked brand new. Every other brand new car I have ever owned I have got 50,000kms out of tyres.

Michelin claim it is the Kia Stinger Geometry set up coupled with the constant auto steering correction whilst driving.

I believe it is shit manufacture.

I changed all four Michelin Pilot 4 Sports out with Yokohama Advan tyres which are significantly more expensive than Michelin and 1000% better. Cost $2000 but rather Yokohama than that Michelin crap ever again.

If you google faulty Michelin tyres you will find others have exactly the same problem

As far as a warranty claim. I wouldn't have a Michelin tyre again ever, They are rubbish.

I notice that your sidewalls are heavily scuffed, yet you apparently missed the wheels. How do you pull off that feat?
 
That’s all on the inside. Both inside front tires. The Pilot Super Sports that were on the front end previously didn’t wear like that. And the rest of the tire is worn pretty flat not on an angle as to suggest bad alignment, but I could have a “toe out” problem.
 
LOL I only got 12000km's out of my rears 😞

Sold my fronts to someone at 18000km's they still had 75% tread

Two front tyres only. Both sides.

No gutter rash on wheels because I dont drive up gutters. They are still brand new

Alignment within spec. Has now been put to exact spec front AND rear.

Appeared very quickly. The compound clearly is deteriorating.

If you believe Michelin.........it is the constant auto adjustment of steering while driving

Equivalent to sitting stationary and turning the steering wheel back and forward.

I don't believe their explanation for a second.

However, I have changed to a better brand. I have the front alignment exactly to Kia Spec.

See what happens. It's been three months.

I will see what the other Stinger does at 20,000 as it is only at 12,000kms on the original Michelins.

I can guarantee, as a past tire tech for 8-9 yrs, that tire has gone flat at least once and was driven on flat. That’s the rim, with the full weight of that particular corner, wearing the tire like that when driven on flat.

I have a degree in Electrical Engineering....and serviced my own cars for decades. That beats your 8 years as a tyre surgeon.

....and just so that you are aware (go back and read the post again re Michelin response) not once did they suggest someone drove around all day on flat front tryes oblivious to the fact especially when the latest model Stinger (you do have the latest model don't you?) has tyre monitoring and instantly alerts you below 32psi.

These are run at 38 all round check weekly mate.

They already gave an explanation albeit an incorrect one so I hardly think I need the advice of a tyre technician.

Take wheel off

Put tyre on wheel

Put tyre back on type of guy.

Now, if you said you were a 747 pilot....that you make 50 decisions a minute on landing and get everyone of those decisions dead accurate right............I might take your advice..........

However, to suggest..............that it is TWO front Tyres running FLAT caused the problem suggests

1. You have never driven a car before

2. You have and think that makes you an expert

My local tyre "fitters cos that's what they are have seen this multiple times. Not a degree in sight.
 
Got the new Conti’s on the front, 255/35r20. So far, do good. Very smooth ride. I like ‘em! Have yet to get them up to cruising speeds, 90-100mph. Will update yall soon.

Wouldn't want you to be driving around on FLAT tyres and not know about it and have them CRACK.

Sorry I should’ve been a little more specific on what I was referring too. I meant where it’s clearly worn through the Michelin lettering. I’m sure that wear is around the whole side wall of the tire. Clear evidence of a tire being driven on with low or no air pressure. There’s nothing else that would wear a tire sidewall like that. Not even driving it in the gutter which is obvious you haven’t, the rim still looks good. Wasn’t saying I was a tire Dr but they did train us fairly heavily. And with having to replace/repair countless tires, across so many vehicles and tires manufacturers, you start to see common issues. Now the peeling of the tread, yeah definitely poor tire compound. I wasn’t trying to offend or put anyone down. Def didn’t mean to come across that way.

Car is kept brand new (I have two bought new Stingers in 2023 with cash and will be sold still brand new in 5 or 10 years time)

The second has 12,000kms. I wait with patience when the second does EXACTLY THE SAME CRACKING at 20,000 kms

There is another post in this forum maybe three months ago by a female owner in Queensland who has EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM

I will find it for you seeing you are challenged at finding these things

This is your photo. There is clear sidewall wear/damage through the “Michelin” lettering. But go ahead, argue that it’s not. But you’ll be yourself as I’ve learned arguing on the internet is like running in the Special Olympics. Even if you win, you’re still retarded!
