Why does the HUD cycle through this startup sequence (mechanically), even when the car is off?

Ever since new, I have heard this faint, but audible, mechanical sound. I used to wonder what it was, but I know for certain it is the HUD moving internally.

Question is, WHY does the HUD do anything at all when the key is off + doors closed!

Very odd behavior in my opinion.

Mine is a 2018 - do newer models also do this?

So that's what that is, I've wondered about that sound. Maybe the goal is to have it calibrate/test before you start the car so that it's ready to go right away?

Same here! always wondered that as well. Makes sense to me.
