Sunroof won't close

Howdy and welcome to your nightmare, too (this is a day for intros that are horror stories). I wouldn't take the payments if that means giving up warranty claims on this job.

And no, the Stinger does not have issues with the sunroof. Individual vehicles have issues. Sorry yours is one of them, but hopefully everything will be perfect when this is done.
Thanks! I'm still suspicious of the sunroofs. There was already another Stinger with the same sunroof problem waiting to get fixed after mine. It seems to be an odd coincidence that the same issue keeps showing up on different Stingers.

Update: I finally got it back a little over a month after bringing it in. Kia service guy was super apologetic and said they are now getting grief from Kia corp over what they had to pay the body shop to do the job.

There is no way in hell I am signing the corporate release as it includes a sec 1542 waiver to release Kia of ANY and ALL future issues known or UNKNOWN problems with the car. It leaves the warranty in place, but tries to wash their hands otherwise. Not worth two car payments for the unknowns. I told them it wasn't reasonable. I'm ok with settling the sunroof issue release, but it shouldn't touch any other aspects of the car.

Thats so crazy they are touching the windshield... WHY? As far as I know, they didn't touch mine. 4 WEEKS?! The body shop did mine in a day.
Did they replace the entire assembly? Perhaps they only replaced certain parts of it. The body shop that did this seemed straightforward and legit. I talked to the owner a few different times. ...but you never really know...

Several entire sunroof assemblies have been replaced on the forum. Yours is the only one I've seen that the windshield was even mentioned.

Yes, glass and all the metal rails and even the fabric up front. I could tell it was all new just by looking at it.

I know this thread is a bit old, but just chiming in to say that I am suddenly having this same issue with my 2022 Stinger GT2. Sunroof has been working fine up until now (purchased Nov. 2021) and I use it pretty often. I have less than 10k miles on it, can anyone confirm that a motor issue would be covered under the warranty?

Fingers crossed we don't get any rain overnight, I'm going to take it into the dealership near me first thing tomorrow morning. Per their website it doesn't look like they have any appointments available until mid-August, but I am hopeful they can at least get it shut/sealed for the time being when I take it in.

Mine was a warranty job, car was 5 months old. I dont know what the standard warranty is on them. Hopefully holding the button gets yours to close enough until parts come in. Have them hit it with the pressure washer to make sure its not leaking. Keep us posted.

We bought our 2022 Stinger GT in June 2021 and the sunroof issue just occurred last night. I was on the phone with consumer affairs and as long as it is a manufacturers defect, they said it is covered.

OP here. Wow, it just broke again in the exact same fashion. Same side and everything. This is what I get for actually using my sunroof. ffs.
wow... that sucks!! i've used my sunroof almost once a week since purchase in july 2020 and have over 32k miles now...

I use it daily, sometimes alternate between wide open (city) and tilted (highway). I don't operate it on bumpy roads or anything. It broke while I was parked.

What a crappy run of bad luck! :( I have over 58K miles and use my sunroof not only daily but open and close it multiple times per drive: tend to close it entirely on the freeway and open it all the way on surface roads. I only use the tilt seldom.

Just to update on this. I took the car in September, they diagnosed, sent the warranty request, which Kia Canada DENIED because tech didnt diagnose. The dealer let it sit there. I inquired in November wtf is going on? They said it was denied and dropped the ball by not following up. So they tried to push it through again. I visited the dealer weekly asking for an update because they never answer the phone or call me back. "its with warranty" "we cant call warranty its all email" "its with the district service manager". Fed up I called Kia corporate who won't involve themselves with dealer/warranty relations, but they'd call the dealer on my behalf to get an update. Useless. Brick wall after brick wall.

They scheduled me for a new appointment this week to diagnose again and start over with warranty. I guess the sunroof is made-to-order now, so if-and-when this claim gets approved, I have to wait for them to build it in Korea and ship by boat. Expecting a 6 month wait before its fixed.

Honestly f*cking ridiculous. Whats the point of a warranty if it takes a f*cking year to get fixed. It was SOOO easy last time, a few weeks wait, done and done.

read through the thread, how many sunroofs break at all? and how many break twice? amazing run of bad luck. and to have kia dealership and corporation mishandle this is insult to injury. wishing that feeling sorry for somebody produced results, then right now you would get the call 'it is all better come get your car', that's how sorry Ima feeling for you.

Follow-up in case anyone reads this later -

The dealership took care of everything. They covered parts, labor and a rental car while the work was being done. The most frustrating part for me was just how long it took. It was about a 2 week turnaround from when I dropped it off. Part of it is probably a local dealership and service issue though. It was:
  • Drop car off, 2 days before they officially say it can't be fixed
  • ~5 days for them to get the new sunroof apparatus + ceiling liner
  • 2 days before they could do anything with it because it required two technicians
  • 3 more days because after the two technicians swapped the apparatus, they also needed a 3rd party 'glass specialist' to come in to install the panel on the new housing (6 screws I believe, lol). Unfortunately he has a busy schedule apparently
  • 1 final day for the finishing touches and detailing that took until the end of the day to be ready.

All in all, not the worst thing in the world just longer than I had hoped. Plus there a tiny dent right above the driver's side door now. Small enough that I can't do much about it, big enough that it annoys me when I see it.

Honestly it wouldn't have been so bad if I had a different rental car. The only car available was a 2020 base model Tacoma - and let me tell you, that was not a fun jump. It was like driving a model T compared to my gt2.

OP here with an update.

I brought the car in 2 weeks ago for them to inspect again, take pictures, and send a new warranty request. Today I dropped by to ask for an update. Kia Canada wants the dealer to take my sunroof apart to diagnose the issue before they approve another replacement. If the dealer takes my sunroof apart and it breaks, I'll be without a car for 6 months while we wait for a new sunroof. The dealer does not offer rentals so I'd be out of a car.

The service manager is battling with Kia Canada to prevent all of this. He's had my paperwork on his desk since I brought it in last. It's not fair to me to have no car, or a shitty rental, for 6 months. I bought a stinger to drive a stinger.... not a forte.... not a soul.... and definitely not a bicycle.

They have an unrelated meeting with corporate next week and will bring up my case.

Canada does not have lemon laws but we have CAMVAP which is binding arbitration that can result in a prorated buyback or expenses covered. I don't want to go this route. I just want my car fixed. I don't care if I have to wait 6 months. I'd be content knowing the sunroof is on the way. They cant even give me that. :(

Apparently this TSB is America only, and American TSBs don't apply to Canadian dealears. The part listed in the TSB isn't available for the dealer to purchase in Canada. The saga continues. fml.

Wow, this exact same thing just happened to me today! Ugh, not looking forward to this! Thanks for posting TSB. Same thing...will not go up or down on driver side only. When closed, the passenger side is still sort of 'up'. This is definitely an issue with this car.

Made an appt, but every dealership in my area is saying not til 2nd wk of May. Great.
