Searched the forums and couldn’t find an answer to this but do these cars have Wireless Apple CarPlay? Just bought a 2022 Stinger GT2 AWD and the quick reference guide shows some instructions on how to setup CarPlay wirelessly but I can’t get it to work. It does say (Standard Audio System-Value only) in the setup instructions but I have no idea what that means. Is wireless CarPlay only available in certain trim lines? Seems like the most expensive trim line would not be left out. Apologize in advance if this was already answered.

No wireless Apple CarPlay. KIA is moving towards it with some models and certain trim levels but it’s a little clunky where some vehicles with lower trims have it and the obvious higher trims don’t.

Thanks, I’ve only had the car for two days so far but man these things are fun to drive. Don’t even care about the $4/gallon gas.

Wish I could get gas for $4/gal. We always get screwed here in Ca., premium (91 octane, can't even get 92 or 93) is hovering around $6/gal.

Many people said that Amazon has so many knock-offs. I rather go with one that someone has used and know works.

That's slick! Do my eyes deceive me, or do I see a USB port on the butt of the dongle? Does that mean you can daisy-chain your phone off of it (say, to charge it) or perhaps a USB thumbdrive (for additional music, etc.) while enjoying wireless carplay?

(I know, I know, what's the point of wireless CarPlay if you are going to plug the phone in anyway...)

I'm more interested in perhaps keeping a thumb drive full of MP3s / audio files in the car at all times so that I don't have to be subject to the whims of whomever's phone is plugged in / connected to CarPlay at the time. But if the KIA can only have a single 'data' oriented device (a phone or a thumb drive) plugged in at once, then we need something akin to a USB hub to enable both to co-exist. It seems as if this CPLAY2air device might have just that? (But I get that it might only have the power pins connected, and thus is only meant as a charge port, not a data pass-through)

Good eye. It does have a USB port but I haven't tried it. I think the idea would be that you could charge your phone using that port. Not sure if it has data capabilities to do what you're seeking but it would be worth sending an email to the vendor and asking if what you're looking for is possible.

TBH, if I was going to charge my phone, I'd use the dedicated charge port. I've noticed that the 'data' port in my 2018 KIA only seems to provide ~1A of power (standard USB 1.0 behavior), whereas the charge port is probably a 2A port. I frequently see my phone's battery life slowly decrease when I'm using it in CarPlay mode while playing a podcast and navigating, even though it is "charging" all the while, the net power draw is negative. Bit of an oversight on KIA's part, IMHO.

I've actually been contemplating wiring up an adapter that would tie the power rails from the USB charging port over to the primary port so that my phone could draw more current as needed while still providing wired CarPlay services... but if I have wireless CarPlay that all becomes moot.

The Stinger's CPU only seems to have enough data lanes to allow for one USB device to function at a time. I remember reading a thread about someone trying a bunch of USB hubs and none of them working. This specific device may get around that though if it allows USB drive playback at the same time as carplay is running though.

A You-Tuber reviewed this product in the Stinger and says it works flawlessly as well. It does look like you could leverage other media to play audio/video etc as this devices has a micro SD port.

Very slick!

Now I just need something that will speak the binary language of moisture vaporators the KIA's GPS navigation system so that I can ask Siri to route me somewhere and those turn-by-turn dierctions will get fed into my Stinger's HUD.
Perhaps the biggest annoyance I have with the car's infotainment system is is how isolated the systems are. If I want to route somewhere by name (not strict address) and have my HUD reflect it, I have to Park the car, hit Nav, hit Google Local Search, type in the location, wait, select the right one, and then I can drive again. If I want to view Apple Maps instead of the really crappy MapQuest-circa-2005 built-in GPS the car has, I then have to ask Siri to do the same thing and then tap Media (or the "Star" button, which I've set to switch over to CarPlay always).

I'm routinely hard-pressed to do all of this fast enough at a stop light... but having to re-route where I'm going is pretty common. Grr!

Here is the YouTube video to go with my post above.

USB expansion isn't about data lines. A USB port only has a data line (actually a differential pair, but that is just electronics) and two power pins.
For expansion to work, the host (infotainment system in this case), must know how to initialize any USB hub to be able to talk to the expansion ports. Apparently, they cheap'd out and didn't bother to implement more than the most basic USB host protocol.

I had a suspicion that would be the case. It probably also means that the only recourse for (wireless) CarPlay + data storage is going to be the Octa-Core AI Box or similar devices... essentially a SoC computer that knows how to leverage the video-and-audio-over-USB protocol that CarPlay uses in order to use it as an external display (with touch input) and an external DAC / sound renderer. Then the mini "computer" is doing all of the device enumeration and drive mounting and such and the KIA is none the wiser.

that much I knew, but I meant in it in a physical sense, as the usb port in the front console is the only 1 of the 2 in the car that actually have anything connected to the connector. At least, that was the case when I took a look at the rear connection in my MY18. Most people understand the term "data line" better than they would a "differential pair" as well which is why I called them that for reference. You are 100% correct though, that is the actual reason why it doesn't work. I'm not surprised they cheap'd out on it at all to be honest, most cars don't support USB hubs, in this case I believe it is because the version of Android (and by extension, Linux) that they are using to run the infotainment probably doesn't support much more than the most basic host protocol.

Asked and answered (and not as we'd hoped, c'est la vie):

Absolutely! Always good to have the data. I'm really leaning towards the other solution (the mini-Android PC) at this point...

Just to be clear: the 10.25 inch infotainment screens in Hyundai/Kia products (usually the high end) have all the appropriate hardware to run wireless CarPlay. The issue is that there is a pissing contest between Hyundai/Kia and Google/Apple. They put Navigation in the bigger screen and there is dispute as to who gets the primary navigation rights and who needs to pay who money. One would think H/K would understand no one wants to use their Nav over Google Maps but that doesn't seem to be the case. Hyundai confirmed this is the issue to several automotive journalists. This implies a future software update can fix this once the issue resolves but Kia said that is unlikely to happen. This is why smaller screens on cheaper cars have the feature. They don't have built in Nav. Hope this helps!
