Sorry everyone...kind of a buzzkill post here and I can't believe we've come to a point where this is something we now have to worry about...but here we are. I may sound paranoid to some, but I'm wondering what happens when you drive away in our cars without having the keys. Will the car just run until you turn it off? With the auto start/stop feature enabled, will it just turn off and stay off at a light? I assume for safety reasons, the car won't just shut off after driving it for a bit.
The reason I'm asking is we've had 2 people in our neighborhood car jacked in the last week. Last one was 2 days ago, 3 doors down from our house. It was 7am and they boxed the car in at a stop sign, pistol whipped her and made off with her Maserati....f***ing dirtbags. This surge in car jackings is now happening in every neighborhood around the city and it's a verrrrrry real problem. The gorgeous look of this car that originally drew me to it can also make it a tasty target. We live in a good neighborhood on the North side of Chicago but we're getting the HELL outta here in June and moving out of the city (HOPEFULLY out of state if I have my way).
My good friend, who's a police officer, gave me the idea of leaving my "Real" keys in my pocket and keeping a set of "Dummy" keys (battery removed from key fob) in my cup holder so if/when they demand the keys, the dummy keys are right there in the cup holder. I know many of you will say "Just give them the damn car...it's not worth it" and I agree with you. I conceal carry but the last thing I'm gonna do is reach for my firearm when someone has a gun to my face. I'll give up the car if I have to, but if it can shutdown shorty after the jacking, then that will limit the chances of them hurting someone during the getaway or using my car to carjack someone else which is exactly what they've been doing around here. And to be honest, I'd like to get my car back in one piece if possible. Unreal we have to think about this stuff but this is the world we live in and it's only gonna get worse moving forward. Be safe out there and if you live in Chicago, keep your head on a swivel at stop lights.

Don't worry. Auto stop is completely different than your pressing the button to turn the system on and off. The two are completely unrelated. Auto stop merely stops the engine, but the system stays on and ready and will re-engage the engine as needed. Your main on/off button turns the entire system on and off.

What will happen is (a) the car will scream bloody murder to let you know the key is out of range, and (b) it will continue to run until you press the button to turn it off.

Try this in a controlled fashion, with your wife several cars back holding your keys out of range, so you'll know exactly what happens.

If that's how carjackers in your area behave, wanting the keys, then absolutely. Why not.

but if it can shutdown shorty after the jacking
hmmmm, doesn't Kia have an app? But if you're worried about this, maybe use LoJack or similar.

it's just a thing, and easily replaced. If you have insurance, let them deal with it. Get another one to replace if if this happens.

All the cars that I know of will run until you turn them off... typically they want the parts, not the car (it's worth more in parts than a hot car- unless of course they are shipping it to another country )

Wow...sorry for your situation Buzz. Violent car jackings are pretty rare in my part of the world. As Adam stated, it is only a car and can be replaced. But I know how you would feel if it was stolen. As far as I am aware the car will keep running and you won’t be able to turn it off without the key fob.

Thanks for the info Adam! Sucks we actually have to think about this. Not for much longer though. Unfortunately, the UVO app in the US is pretty much useless. I believe NA is the only market that can't use the remote start/stop feature on UVO. I have no idea why...lame Thanks again:thumbup:

Thanks Nass...yeah its crazy here. Car jackings are up 140% over last year. Right around 1400 incidents...insane numbers. It used to be concentrated on the south and west sides of the city but now its making it's way north to the more affluent areas. People are leaving this city in DROVES! We're next. Maybe we'll come live with you guys. When you are driving, leave yourself a way out. Whenyou see something start to go down, GTFO. Don't forget to run the a-holes over.

Wow stay safe. When I lived in Phoenix that was a concern I had, drove a lot late night (on call at hospitals) always drove with all doors locked, cell phone ready (once they came into the picture) loaded gun. I was followed home twice, both times they peeled off when I picked up my phone and put the gun on the dash. Neither time did I lead them all the way to my house. This was before everybody shoots first. My rx7 did catch attention back then.

Now live is rural MD, pretty safe tiny neighborhood. Don't drive in DC, Baltimore, etc.

Trade the stinger for a manual.
I dunno, based on his description of the carjackings ("pistol whipped") it sounds like they'd just shoot him the moment they got in the car and couldn't drive off.

I actually work at a police impound lot. We get in new cars that have been stolen all the time. As others have said, the push button start cars can go for however long that they have gas. Once you shut them off, that's it. We actually got in a stolen Trackhawk. Car was running but we couldn't find the fob. Most likely the people that stole it just bailed and had the fob on them, left the car running. The tow driver was able to get in it and drive it up onto the bed. That thing sounded nasty! Still the only Trackhawk I've seen in person.

Its a great question, i never thought of it, however in todays world its a reality.
I guess the smart answer is just give them the car....it replaceable....you and your family are not.
