I'm am in the process of doing this. Mostly on the FB groups for updates. So far, the pin out is mostly the same. 2 wires are different on the lvds cable. When I plugged the 8" in it turns on but no touch function. Couldn't get dealer to confirm if firmware is needed. Makes no sense why it would being that the pins are the same just different in order. You need a different dash trim also.
I don't see how unless you use the Kia programmer but my dealer insider says he has no knowledge of that being needed. It's possible (sneaking suspicion) the lvds send/receives signal that corresponds to the 7" or 8" separate. For example the 7" speaks Spanish and the 8 speaks German. The video signal appears to be through the greens and blue while touch transfers on brown and orange. Video is like standard between both screens. But touch interpretation could be different. I ordered a AVN unit to try (originally from a gt1/gt2) to see if that's the issue. Also ordered another screen to rule out a bad digitizer
I only mentioned that because it seems that 99% of the electronic components that we order here at BMW need programming nowadays. Definitely interested to see what you come up with.
I'm just unsure how it would be programmed. Says nothing about it on kgis. Dealer service manager had no details on it. Stated it should be plug n play (for programming portion)
the 7" and 8" screen use different touch screen processors. they speak different languages. you can swap the 7" for the 8" but wont have any touch screen function unless you buy a navigation unit from a premium/GT1/GT2. i bought one from a GT1 and got it working today. all the pins/wires on the headunit are the same to swap the navigation unit into the gt.
i also have a spare 8" screen for sale with a minor blemish on the side you wont see for $250

you can plug just the 8" screen into your stock audio unit (base model or GT) and it will turn on but touching it wont do anything as they use different touch screen processors between the 7 and 8. the audio unit is the silver box above your climate control. that controls a bunch of things. that is what im calling the NAV unit. you need the whole thing to make the 8" fully work
Not horrible, in my opinion, but that comes from selling BMW parts everyday. Also, might take a little bit but you could recoup some of that money by selling the original parts.
navigation is in all the cars, just not used unless you have the nav audio unit. GPS works perfect

So I picked up the 8" screen and the dash trim piece that it attaches to. All that is left is to get a head unit with nav correct? No additional plugs or anything? Just swap out the oe non nav unit for the nav head unit?

So as I mentioned, I bought the trim piece out of a gt1. It has the white writing on the bottom. Does anyone know exactly what is different about that piece compared to a gt? Reason I ask is that the piece I bought is beat to hell and scratched up pretty bad, I'd send it back if I knew I could find another one soon but this is the first one I've seen for sale so not likely. Im wondering can the stock gt unit base cover piece be reused and the back part that the screen attaches to be swapped in? That piece can be unscrewed.
