• PLEASE! It is VERY important that this area is not used for the discussion of technical issues with your Stinger. This section is for posting about regional-specific things like Stinger clubs, events, local vendor or dealer recommendations, KiaStinger.com member sightings, etcetera... In other words, I do NOT want people to need to scour through several different sections to find answers about their heads up display. That's why there's a section dedicated specifically to discussions like that. THANK YOU!

A joker was sitting up my rear so I couldn't reverse into a parallel park this morning, so first time ever I drove in front first and I smashed into a higher than normal curb. Checked damage to duco, non (phew), then saw the front left rim & tyre, my heart sank.
Major damage on two parts of the outer rim, two thumb size marks on the inner/spoke part of the rim. Tyre has scuff marks on it and a thumbnail sized chunk out of the firewall, still attached but peeled away - safe to drive home 15km but not safe to keep using.

I hoped the spare would have an alloy but it's a space saver tyre so assuming rim wouldn't match anyway (??).
Making matters worse, was made redundant 9 weeks ago, still can't find work so have to be tight with $ but definitely need a new front Pilot Sport 4 (or was MY19 the 4 's'?) now, and I can't bare to look at the damaged rim (it's pretty bad), I'm absolutely devastated. No work, just before Christmas and family live 200km away so can't drive on that tyre with my child in the car (just me and I would probably risk it). Looks like my young fella won't be getting much from Santa this year :(

Right, so question after the overly long above rant, does anyone know a) any deals going on a new (or near new) Pilot Sport 4 225/40/19 tyre and/or someone who has upgraded their rims and has the originals still? I may be able to buy two rims (in case I am that stupid again). I live in Bendigo.

Thanks in advance, sorry for long msg, I am gutted right now. Never hit a gutter in over 30 years of driving...then do it to the best car I have ever owned. Idiot.

Well, crap. From way up here I am sending sympathy vibes to way down there: the Net can accomplish this! Now, if it were only possible to find you a job. Dang. That IS above my pay grade. So, I'm praying that you do.

This is the best car I've ever owned too. And it would truly suck if I hurt it and money was so tight that I couldn't fix it. Keep looking. I know I've seen OE GT rims for sale on the forum; some of them must be in Oz. Tires have been even more commonly offered for sale "here". But, Oz? And in time for Xmas traveling? Seems like a long shot. But, miracles do happen.

Dang, hard luck. Try posting in classifieds - WTB OEM 225 tire or similar - sometimes there are people selling the OEM wheels / tires / whatever. Or try ebay. Some people put the stock rear 19s on the front as well to do 255 all around, and then they have the 225s going for cheap.

Very sorry about hearing what's happened to your Stinger. It sounds like the tyre definitely needs replacing but surely you can get the rim fixed. Merlin is the expert in this field as he is always running his rims against the kerb. I hope your Christmas gets better and your job prospects improve in the new year. All the best.

So far numerous tyre places say they have no Pilot Sport 4 in stock (assuming it's not the Sport 4S on an MY19 - they have no pf those either), Michelin warehouse has none...is there any real difference between the Sport 4 and the Sport 4S? Any issues if 3 of the one tyre i.e. Sport 4 and the other tyre is the 4S?

I have zero experience bending, dinging or caving in rims. I am only the curb rash "king". But I do know that bent rims can be repaired. What is @Wazz supposed to run on while his rim is being resurrected?

I would never mix A/S with summer tires. The PS4S is a better tire than the PS4. I've found my 4Ss to be quieter, grippier and softer riding. The tread and compound of the 4S and 4 are compatible, according to "my" tire guys; I ran brand new 4Ss in the rear for 4K miles before the 4s in front needing replacing. I went all the way to Atlanta from Salt Lake City and back, then replaced the 4s in front with 4S.

I would never mix A/S with summer tires. The PS4S is a better tire than the PS4. I've found my Silky Silver to be quieter, grippier and softer riding. I am sure my MY19 came with the 4's not the 4S... nothing says 4S on the firewall so assuming just the 4? Anyway, if I found a 4S would it change dynamics having the 4 and the 4S? I may not have much of an option as it seems stocks are depleted here anyway. Hopefully as you said, tread etc should be the same.

The PS4 is the OE tire, for some reason, and hard to find. The PS4S is the mass market tire, and according to the advice I received is not a problem being used with the PS4. I ran them in pairs, but if your 4s have a lot of tread depth left, it should be fine running a 4S on one side and a 4 on the other.

Cool, yer car is only 6 months old, tyres (as spell 'em here) have around 9500k (6000 miles?) and in perfect condition... well one isn't

Quick fixes...

RIM --- ok some careful sanding with a dremel type tool to file off the chunky bits, then sand with various grades of wet n dry sandpaper till smooth. this will reduce the "rash" you are showing there. It wont eliminate it (without proper repair) but you should get to a good enough result that you almost not notice it without looking for it.

TYRE ---- I would not worry too much about the tyre chunk if it is only cosmetic (picture is hard to see), but you could get the front tyres swapped to the opposite rim to "hide" the damage on the inner side.

Thanks mate, appreciate the advice! Will see if I can find someone to help with the rim as I am a luddite with this kind of stuff. There looks like a small bend in the rim near one scratch too.

The chunk out of the tyre is the size of a thumbnail and fairly deep, so as is on the firewall not sure how it will handle under load or speed. It it were less deep I'd be less worried. chunk1.webp chunk2.webp chunk3.webp

Hey, I didn't see the pics originally: @Wazz edited and included afterward. Those are only cosmetic, i.e. rather deep curb rash: I do know about this stuff! The above advice is good, except I don't think you'll need a Dremel type grinder; just a heavy grit sandpaper to knock down the raised metal and get to the bottom of the worst scratches; then a middle grit, starting with say 200; finish up with wet-dry 2000 or higher and use lots of water; this will polish the alloy up nicely.

The chunk out of the sidewall is not serious! It didn't reach the belts; only bit the sidewall rib. I wouldn't push the tire well over 100 MPH, but until you can afford a replacement it should be safe enough.

A "parking speed" kerb scrape / hit would not normally cause any serious wheel or tyre damage ... only cosmetic.
All the best and try have a Merry Xmas ... you drive a Stinger so enjoy that at the very least.

Hi Wazz,

The rim is not an issue it's only a deep gutter rash and these factory wheels are pretty thick so no issue there, a good panel shop will be able to fix the rim.
The tyre while cosmetically bad with a deep gouge, if you cannot see the sidewall belting 2 things:
1: the tyre is still serviceable and in Victoria is still road worthy as long as the belts are not showing.
2: With regards to the safety of the tyre, it's still safe at and up to the speed rating of the tyre.
The rubber that got gouged is actually not structural it's there to protect the RIM from gutter rash and while it's unsightly and I agree, it currently not unsafe unless the sidewall belts are exposed.

I did see the photos Merlin and that is why I recommended your advice. Seemed to be in your ball park of experience.

The Kia gt Facebook club Australia often has wheels advertised for sale. I saw some recently, and Wazz I've seen you on there before so checkout the Market place section.

Or do as what the guys suggested above. Job wise never give up. I was in a similar position 8 years ago, they let 230 people go 7 days before Christmas. A month after I sold my beloved Merc I found an job. Good luck.

Don't beat yourself up about it @Wazz it happens to the best of us. Hope it's a practical fix for you and hope a Job opportunity comes your way real soon.

Love it how you Americans say " Dang " :)

Thanks to all for comments, suggestions etc so far, really appreciated. One thing with the gouge out of the tyre, I can swap the front tyres around to hide it, but is it worth keeping in easy view to monitor it in case it gets worse though or in theory should it not get worse? Yer, not really up with the tyre biz!

@Wazz - might want to give a hint as to your profession - lots of Australians on here, who knows who might have a lead?
