Yeah, I was already of a mind that TPMS is for watching for leaks. At the tire (cold, first thing) is for actual psi, add air as necessary. My cheapo O'Reilly's gauge is probably good enough for that. I'm still not sure how off, or which way off, it is. The gauge is consistent: Once I determine the inaccuracy, I can just add or subtract a pound or more from what I see.
