This dealership is a block from my house in suburban Philadelphia, so I figured I would start with them. They had one Stinger GT2 AWD sitting in the front of the lot for a few months, so I figured they were either holding onto it to drive in traffic to the dealership or just couldn't sell it. Their site had the car for about $49500. Kia had a $2000 July rebate under certain financing conditions. I emailed them with a starting price of $1000 less than requested. They requested I come in the next day to go over numbers and take a test drive.
My wife and I came in at 7 PM and I brought my 2016 WRX Limited w/ 23k miles & a clean carfax that I have had for about 3 years. We had a hard out at 7:45 (for actual reasons).
The salesman was very personable and was eager for us to test drive it. It was pretty clear he was not the most knowledgeable about the car, but I usually don't hold that against salesman unless they pretend to know things they don't. No credit checks or anything. The car had about 500 miles on it already. The GM later told me he used it a few times. The car was there for a few months, so I wasn't that surprised. On the drive back from the test drive, some idiot turned right in front of me as I was entering an intersection at around 30 mph. It was my reflexes or the automatic braking system that saved us from ramming him. I stopped about 2' from his truck. I was sold on the brakes at that point.
We got back around 7:30. I wanted to get at least numbers that were close to what I wanted, then come in the next day to whittle them down. They started with their list price (w/ $2k rebate, that was $47.5k) and offered $21.5k for the WRX. I said I wanted to pay $46.5k and get $24k for my WRX. At that point, I had to leave, so I told them to come back with an offer via email. The finance guy starts dropping the price until I hit my numbers. It helped that my wife walked home at that point and started yelling (for dramatic effect). I got $22k for the WRX and the stinger for a bottom line price of $44.5k. Next time I buy a car, I am definitely incorporating that hard out strategy. It really cuts through the bullshit. I put $10k down and went with the 3.9% financing for 60 months. After we went over everything, the finance guy said he got shit for selling it that low, but the dealership had to move 1 a month to get some kind of Kia bonus.
My only real disappointment is that this car has the 18" wheels with all-seasons and the dealership couldn't do anything about it. I actually don't mind the 18" wheels themselves, because the roads around here are shit, but I really would like the performance tires. I'll probably buy them online and sell the all-seasons on Craigslist. Also, there was a seatbelt buckle imprint in the leather where they must have had the rear seats down on it. Some heat and leather conditioner should fix that right up.
