I guess the forum prompts must work because here I am giving my introduction which I rarely do! I guess you’re getting a long one.
I picked up my 2018 Stinger GT Limited (AWD here in Canada) in white last Tuesday. I came from a 2015 Mustang GT 6 speed manual that I was tired of driving for an array of reasons, but most particularly a lack of build quality (EVERYTHING rattled and creaked) and the fact I was seeing other quality issues that I just wasn't willing to accept or pay to upkeep on a car with only 20,000 miles (32,000km).
So far I've been surprised with the Stinger, it seems I enjoy driving it more now that I own it than on the test drives. I'm really surprised with the seemingly sharp turn in and how nimble it feels for such a heavy car. I'm not a buyer that needs a ton of tech, but I appreciate that it has so much. Most importantly I'm happy I bought a car that doesn't need panels ripped off to replace speakers, they're finally good enough from the factory for my liking.
I bought into the Stinger for various reasons. It seemed like an overall good vehicle, and I like the perceived support Kia is offering on the vehicle in regards to warranty. I feel this is Kia's foray into the territory Lexus broke into in the late 80's and I really hope Kia built a quality vehicle to the same regard as the Lexus LS and whatnot back in the day with support to match.
In regards to quality, I have scoured the boards prior to my purchase and knew the potential issues I might have. Unfortunately I'm never a lucky car buyer and mine isn't perfect, but I brought the car in to the dealership on day 2 to get particular items noted:
Minor: A couple noticeable pieces of dirt/contaminants trapped under the stone guard on the hood, they will fix it for free since they had it installed and warranty it.
Major: The car has a couple paint defects. Not sure whether to class them as damage from factory install or possible peeling. The only defects I found are on the urethane parts – not steel, a tiny chip/peel under the driver headlight at the corner nearest to the center, and a much larger chip/peel on the driver side skirt/rocker behind the rear door on the very top where it meets the rear quarter panel. The dealer will likely attempt to touch up and I will determine the quality of that repair, but I will specifically ask for it to be noted on file so I can escalate if it does not fix the problem. I fear paint adhesion issue, but time will tell on that.
As for interior quality, the center console lid creaks if you lean on it when getting in, but never over bumps when driving – so that’s fine. I hear a couple ticks here and there but I think it’s likely the usual suspects of door trim needing some felt or adjusted door latches. No hatch rattle to note. Overall, I’m going to do my best to just leave the stereo turned on and try to ignore them otherwise I’ll go crazy with this car too. I didn’t want to buy into the German brands because up here in Canada, something similar spec runs us about 15K more, I just didn’t want to swing that kind of payment. I’ve had Kia/Hyundai in the recent past myself and within the family and they’ve held up well, so I have my fingers crossed for the Stinger. PLEASE!!
