With the lead up to the Stinger launch, we were shown photos of the GT model with LED lights and ice cube turn signals, 19" wheels/tires, an aggressive front and rear bumper, surround view camera, electronic gear selector and interiors with a brown leather. What we got in the US market as a base model is a vehicle with a projection beam headlight, wheels that aren't standouts for the car, and not much of an exterior color choice. This reminded me of when Volvo launched their XC90 SUV and with "Thor's Hammer" lightening signature, then brought a base model with reflector based headlights, folks didn't want that, a year later all the XC90's in the US got the signature headlights.

For the Stinger, the should be no version with a projector beam headlight, the LED light setup is a signature feature for that car, it should be on all models sold here and everywhere else in the world. The 2.0 Premium should be the base car with the next level up being a 2.0T with a GT style appearance package with the Brembo Brakes 18" GT wheels, not in a staggered setup. Bring the full compliment of exterior colors and additional interior color such as Brown or call it Cappuccino and have Mocha as an alternative. Do a Dark Grey version as well as some 2 tone seating trim along with the standard colors you already have.

For the Sound system, HK should be the standard with the Lexicon or Krell system being an option. The Entertainment screen should be 8" minimum on all versions, put a longer one if you can or just make navigation optional and a separate item, keep Android Auto and Apple Car Play as most folks prefer to use their phone's navigation. Offer remote services, such as door/window open/close, remote start and send directions to car (on versions with navigation). While we are on the interior, you could offer a package with the heads up display, power steering adjustment, Sport gauges, electronic parking brake, adjustable suspension and the electronic shifter on the other models. Not everyone will want it but some would like to have a loaded vehicle with the Stinger looks.

Lastly, as a car level above the Optima, it should have a heated steering wheel as standard, not having full heated seat as an option on a car above the Optima when you offer it there, makes no sense to owners of your current vehicles with this feature. It shouldn't take getting AWD to have these features. In addition to that, the engine's performance should also be at a level above the Optima's and more in line with the cars it competes with. Why not tune it to deliver 285 lb ft of torque so it tops the competitors at it's level, or offer a Sport Tune at a reasonable price. Some folks will want the looks but not the V6 power, why not let them have that? Getting these cars out there so folks who would not have normally looked at KIA can experience a car that competes with the Germans on both level would have them buying one instead of their German counterparts.

In closing, don't limit this vehicle. Make it the KIA with the power to surprise!

The Stingers here in sunny tropical Singapore have heated steering wheels, definitely surprising!

Yesterday I went to check out a 2.0T Premium to get a good feel of the car I was originally considering. The first one felt harsh with a bit of vibration, a quick check of the TPMS showed the tire pressure to be 52 psi and rising, the vehicle was also low on fuel. Took that car back to get another that was properly setup. The ride was much like the GT, taut but comfortable, the way I like it and not as harsh as my R-Design’s can be. This time I took it out on the highway and I noticed the noise level at 55 mph to be on the high side for that stretch of road. This being the same stretch of road I tested a newly released 2016 Optima EX which had a quieter exterior than the 2014 Hybrid EX I was leasing. The Stinger Premium’s noise level at 55 mph was similar to what my2017 Hybrid EX produces at 70 mph. The noise was mostly wind noise from what I could tell, but maybe the tires played a role as well. The tires on the Stinger Premium were Bridgestone Potenza RE97AS-02, I’ll have to look up the specs. The first gen of those tires has been surpassed by many of their competitors, I’m curious to see how these fare. The stock tires for the Hybrid are the Kumho TA31 and they are pretty quiet.

The Stinger Premium reminded me of my Volvo T5 R-Design, good isolation but not exceptional, which can be disrupted at higher levels of speed. That being said, the 2017 Optima Hybrid is quieter than both. If KIA adds similar glass to the doors of the Premium as the GT, it would make this car feel a level above the Optima, in reality, it should be better overall than Cadenza. I’m going to drive the other premium/luxury brand competing models (from a price/trim perspective) for comparison and share my findings.

I completely agree!! The cross traffic and blind spot should be standard on all models too. This would make the 2.0 have the power to surprise and win me over as a customer.
