Buying Extended Warranty

Hey everyone!

So I know that from the factory my 2020 Stinger GT RWD comes with a [5 yr/60,000 mi basic, 10 yr/100,000 mi powertrain] warranty and I love that! Such a solid warranty from the manufacturer was a huge selling point for me over the other vehicles I was cross-shopping. With that said though, I do want to keep the car at least ten years, and am worried about little electronic problems with the backup camera or the blind spot detection or what not.

Does anyone know of a warranty plan (either through Kia Corporate or a third party vendor) that is trusted to bring the warranty up to a 10yr/100k mile bumper to bumper if not better? Preferably without any deductibles? I have never purchased (nor has anyone in my family) ever purchased extended warranties or maintenance plans. We've had good luck with both our family Camry's and 94' Volvo... bought all three used and kept them over a decade while putting on well over 100k miles on each.

My Stinger is the first new car I (or anyone in my family) has ever purchased new. Most of the cars my family has purchased have been after warranty expired. My e36 I purchased had no warranty and over the three years of ownership I spent more fixing it and keeping it running than the $1800 I spent to buy it cash in the first place. Lesson learned as a dumb and eager 18 year old though!

Thanks ahead of time btw! Thank you all! :)

Bought mine when I bought the car. Cost me $3k for 8yrs/200000KM bumper to bumper. Since I plan on keeping the car for many years to me its worth it. To much tech and those twin turbos could cost a pretty penny if something goes wrong.

I tried to purchase the extended warranty when I bought the car but I was given such a ridiculous quote. I told them I needed a few days to think about it. After less than 48 hours I contacted them twice by email and never got a response. When I called they said they were firm on the price and insisted that because I got such an amazing deal OTD they couldn't further budge on the extended warranty cost so I thanked them for their time.

I remember when I bought my WRX it still had factory warranty but I was looking at extended warranty options through third party vendors approved by Subaru but they all had either high deductibles or were so expensive that it would have cost me more in the long run.

Hit me up at 970-889-9835. Aftermarket warranties are an interesting one. My brokerage uses CNA national...Stingers were right around 1800-2200 for ten years of comprehensive with an optional $175 upcharge for modified suspension and wheels. They're pretty solid and have actual technicians on staff.
Another favorite of mine is JM&A for warranty. Theyre another big national warranty company with ALOT of different coverage options but, they do trend a little more expensive.

Hi, I did the exact thing I purchase the extended warranty believe me things gets nasty over 5 years example my elentra 2011 specially electronic parts electricals as well, I drove it for 10 years. My self as a electronic Engineer working in product integrity in environmental climate's there is so many electronic parts on the stinger after years they failed. Some of the car manufacturer do have Eng. to have a cycle breakdown on parts. Exp. Relays: we test electronic relays from Germany, Japan, China and other countries the environment cycles are so much of a big gap between manufacturer in life expectancy it's crazy. Car maker's make more money on parts and service then new vehicles. Bottom line to purchase a $50k car and hold it for 10 years this was the best investment if you purchase the extended trust me. My self I purchase the kia extended warranty bumper to bumper that includes electronics, electricals, mechanical.

At the kia dealership in Canada I purchase the warranty at the same time that I purchase the vehicle. Unfortunately kia protect looks like they only offer this plan in Canada it's a hell of a good one.

In most cases, the repair(s) needed under the bumper to bumper extension will be equal to or less than the cost of the extended warranty. They don't sell these because they're good for the customer. The most expensive repairs will be covered under the powertrain warranty. IMO it's a better gamble for you to pocket the $2000+ and just pay for the little things as they come. The odds are good you won't have an issue, but the longer you have the car the greater the chances you will. It's not realistic to think a car won't have some issues after 8+ years, but IMO you can't buy a modern car and expect them not to. They're not engineered for longevity. Just look at the industry-wide adoption of direct injection, from an engineering standpoint they're baking planned obsolescence into the friggin engine. [I know this car buying group will likely stay ahead of the carbon buildup through maintenance, but how many average car buyers will?]

Also, some extended warranties start the moment you purchase them, so any issues with the vehicle get covered under the extended not factory warranty (this again depends on the plan purchased). That means you could end up paying copays on repairs that would have been fully covered under manufacturer's warranty. If the extended does not kick in until after the manufacturer warranty expires, then that's obviously ideal. Check the fine print, always.

I was in the same boat as you but I was able to negotiate with the dealer to bring the price down in order to get the bumper to number coverage for 10 years of 100k. But since you purchased 3.3L and if you plan on keeping during that length then it will be worth it. As someone already mentioned in the comments. If the turbos go out it will be a pretty Penny hopefully it does not in all our cases. But if you can add on a extended warranty do it and do not hesitate

Very true, with my experience on the elentra things started to breakdown after the warranty exp: heathed seats the elements are so cheap costs of repair was $800.00 in 10 year's I spend more then $2000 on repairs
That shouldn't be. My extension warranty kicks in after 5 years from the original warranty of the car so my stinger is warranty till 2030 at 140000km except doors handle, fuses, ect.. cosmetic items. If I don't use the extended warranty I will get $1000 back and if I sell my car the warranty fallows the car. Believe me with over 45000 electronic parts I will use the warranty if I keep my stinger for 10years. I notice that US and Canada they have not the exact warranty coverage. This is the first time I purchase a extended warranty will see in 10 years if it was a good move.

Turbo is not covered under powertrain since it is connected to the engine?

If small things stop working like heated seats (never used that in my life even in my current car) I can live with that.

The only electronic thing I don't want to stop working are the backup camera and the blind spot beeping/monitoring assistance. I don't see BlueTooth not working but if the radio magically stops working after a decade I can just do aftermarket.

Good info though!

I just didn't think that paying a few thousand more dollars for an extended warranty when the factory one is so good was worth it at the time... it's all cost vs risk I agree...

This is what on the Protect plan menu under turbo,
Turbocharger housing & all internal parts.
Seals & Gaskets
I assume it cover everything on the turbo?
Here in Canada you really need the heated seat specially at -35C on leather seats. It was just a example of things that breaks down. I'm sure the mirror motors will happen to,
with this weather.

I didn't get the extended warranty b/c I leased, and wasn't sure if I would keep the Stinger after 3 years. At lease end, I opted to buy it since the resale value was > 10,000 more than my buy option. The lease ran 2018-2021. I was never a high mileage driver, and with Covid even less mileage... so I'm only at about 10,000 miles now. Thinking about getting a third party warranty to cover the non-powertrain items.

Any advice/suggestions appreciated!

Do you have to go third party
Or can you get it straight from Kia post purchase?

I didn’t get it at time of purchase either.

Have you ever heard of the bathtub graph?

That's where you draw a graph of failures on the vertical access and time along the horizontal access. From TV sets to cars the graph is the same.

Failures are high at the commencement of operation which is covered by factory warranty and the finish of operation ie end of life where failures again increase

So the graph looks like a bathtub from the side........

During it's operating life however failures are relatively low, this is why extended warranties are a complete waste of money.

Factory warranty covers initial component failures, stuff not made properly, poor assembly etc. After that you should have a relative trouble free life until end of life where failures ramp up.

The factory warranty here in Oz is 7 years unlimited kilometres. Buying any sort of warranty after that is pointless.

I used to think extended warranties were a waste of money. Then we had kids, and started burning through washers & dryers, and we got extended warranties which saved us a lot of $. We used to own a BMW X5, and I wish I had an extended warranty... I used to say, "The X5 knew the day it went out of warranty". Many repairs on that X5, cash out of pocket.

I just had the Dynamic Bending Light issue (there's a thread on that) less than 3 months before the Stinger's 5 year warranty expires. The dealer replaced the right side headlight which would have cost something like 2,000 USD just for the part, plus labor. I was able to get a 5 Year extended warranty from Total Auto Protect for about 2,000 USD which covers everything but the power-train which Kia covers for 10/100,000.

My wife's daily drive is a Subaru Ascent, which just had a new transmission replaced under warranty at 43,000 miles (warranty ends at 50,000 miles) . I got an extended warranty for the Subaru also.

I used to think extended warranties were a waste of money. I've changed my mind because cars and other stuff just aren't made to last.
