This is how hot the Kia Stinger is.

Kia does it sporty with the Stinger . The impressive sedan delivers up to 370 hp and looks noble thanks to it’s coupe-like lines. AUTO BILD has already driven the Stinger!

➤ Introduction: The Stinger is an impressive sports sedan

➤ Interior: Inside you should feel like in a cocoon

➤ Driving: Powerful start and balanced balance (Update!)

➤ Equipment: Serial with automatic eight-speed

➤ Engines: Diesel certified for Europe

➤Technical data: Up to 370 hp in the Stinger

Introduction: A car never before made by Kia

Kia can also do athletic - the Korean manufacturer proves it with this new car: Stinger is the impressive sports sedan, Kia likes to speak of it as a Gran Turismo. A car never before made by Kia . Handsome 4.83 meters long, 1.87 meters wide and 1.40 meters flat. Front with the now Kia-typical "Tiger-Nose" -grill, here in a particularly wide, flat variant, large air intakes and conspicuous LED headlights. Then follow a laaarge hood, a retracted flank with air outlets, 19-inch wheels and a flat, coupé-like design with large tailgate. At the rear there is an amazingly long overhang and a massive stern with two fat double tailpipes - an imposing appearance. The strongest Stinger is at the same time the fastest production Kia: The 370 HP strong V6 is to accelerate the limousine in 5.1 seconds to 100 and speed up to 270 km / h.

At the IAA 2011, Kia had shown the GT, a very similar-looking study. "We got a lot of positive feedback on the GT," says Kia-Design Chef Peter Schreyer, "for the series, we wanted to stay as close to the showcar as possible." Well, the suicide doors are gone, but otherwise: Success! Stinger comes from Sting, English for Stachel. And to the sting in the flesh of established ones, such as the Audi A5 Sportback and the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe, it could actually happen in this form. Production will start in the second half of 2017 and sales will be towards the end of the year. The GT will cost around 35,000 euros.

Interior: You are supposed to feel like in a cocoon

The idea behind the design of the deep inner space is that you should feel like in a cocoon. The high dashboard is strictly horizontal and is interrupted only by the central touchscreen. The slim three-spoke steering wheel with shift paddles again takes up the sporting aspect, but for the comfort it is occupied with different function keys. The central console is divided into two areas: the upper part is used to control the infotainment, the buttons for the air conditioning and the ventilation setting are arranged below.

Driving: Powerful start, properly tuned balance

Why does the first drive happen to take place on the Nordschleife (Northern Loop)? Quite simply, this is where the most sporty Kia has learned to go fast. Furthermore, Hyundai and Kia share a development center directly at the Nürburgring. So we start a lap of the Nordschleife, which reveals a lot about the Stinger. In the first short sprint from the pit lane at the old paddock, the Stinger makes it clear that the 4.9 seconds from 0 to 100 km / h are realistic. The power output of the 370 bhp V6-Biturbos is even, the response powerful, but comparatively unspectacular - the Stinger catapults efficiently forward thanks to it’s AWD . First snaking through the corners at Hatzenbach (Hatzen Creek): The Stinger takes the direction precisely. It is striking how well balanced the Stinger tackles the changing curves, although the suspension in the "comfort" mode permits clear body movements. Bur that’s already it, the 4.83-meter-Limo does not become unsettled during fast cornering.

We continue in the "Sport" mode. Still, the sensation of driving a hard sprung sports car does not come up here either. The remaining comfort is high - if one hits the rumble stones at the track’s edge, these rough shocks largely disappear. But slow the Stinger is not.. Breitscheid is the lowest point of the track and the maturity test for every braking system. This time, the Brembo brakes of the Stinger did not reach the load limit here – because our pace vehicle did not pull out all stops. We are heading towards the Karussell (carousel) - the torque vectoring of the all-wheel drive lets the Stinger carve the corners at their limit , regulates here, pushes torque between the wheels back and forth, actually pulls the four-door into and through the curves, and in the process magically puts a grin on the driver’s face..

After the Karussell, the track leads down to section know as the Schwalbenschwanz (Swallow’s Tail) . In the curving course around Brünnchen (Little Well) the Stinger conveys serenity. The mechanical grip is faultless, and so the Stinger hurries on our test drive at any time predictable through the Green Hell. Last sprint up to to the Döttinger Höhe (Döttinger Heights) : The eight-speed automatic clicks through the gears in short order, the head-up display shows 220 km/h - then the pace car slows us down. 250 km/h could have been reached here anytime. Bottom line: The Stinger will not score any records on the racetrack, but that was also not the goal of it’s development. But: The test drive on the Nordschleife has shown that the Stinger always maintainsit’s composure and can easily be lead to its limits.

Equipment: Automatic is standard

The technology of the Stinger is based on the basic features of the G80 - a limousine of the Hyundai luxury vehicle division Genesis, which not sold here. This includes the longitudinally mounted front engine, rear wheel drive and a chassis with McPherson suspension struts at the front and multi-link axle at the rear. At the Stinger, there will also be all-wheel drive (from Magna) with electronically controlled torque vectoring and, for the first time at Kia, electronically adjustable dampers - which allow the front and rear dampers to be tuned separately. This is done through the various driving modes Eco, Sport, Sport +, Comfort and Smart. These also regulate the response of the steering and the standard eight-speed automatic shifting with shift paddles on the steering wheel. The Brembo brakes come with the top engine, the V6, and depending on the engine choice, the Stinger is clad with 17-, 18- or 19-inch wheels.

The Stinger comes with Stability Control, as an option, Kia has a few additional assistants: a collision warning system with emergency braking system and pedestrian detection, a speed controller, a trail assist assistant, a crossover assistant, a remote assistant and a dead angle assistant monitor. For the first time Kia offers a tiredness warning in the coupé.

In addition to speed, the head-up display also displays various additional information such as the volume of the infotainment or the navigation instructions. The smartphone can be coupled via Bluetooth and charged inductively in the center console.

Engines: Three engines confirmed

For Europe, Kia has already confirmed three engines. There is a Diesel with 2.2 liters displacement, 200 hp and 440 Nm maximum torque. 8.5 seconds for 0 to 100km/h and a top speed of 225 km/h .

In addition, there are two gas engines: a turbo-charged 2 liter, four-cylinder with 225 hp and 353 Nm maximum torque as well as the top motorization - a V6. The 3.3-liter Twin-turbo brings it to 370 hp and 510 Nm maximum torque. The strongest Stinger is simultaneously the fastest standard model from Kia: It will sprint in 5.1 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h, with a max spedd of up to 270 km/h. An eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive are standard. In the future, Kia plans to expand the range of motors with a plug-in hybrid. A full electric version can be implemented on the new platform, but not currently planned. Already more likely is a potential BMW M3 opponent.
